Common questions

What is my IP address?
Your public IP address is the number your internet provider assigns to your connection. Every site you visit sees it, because it is the return address your traffic travels back to. The panel at the top of this page shows yours as your browser reports it.
What is the difference between a public and a private IP address?
A public IP identifies your whole connection on the internet and is unique worldwide. A private IP — anything starting 192.168, 10., or 172.16–31 — identifies one device inside your home or office network and is reused on millions of networks at once. Your router holds both.
Why is my router’s address 192.168.1.1?
It sits in a range reserved for private networks, so it can never clash with a real internet address. Manufacturers picked the first usable address in that range as the default gateway, which is why the same handful of addresses appear on almost every router.
Does my IP address reveal my exact location?
No. It usually narrows you to a country or region and identifies your provider, but not a street address. Accuracy varies widely — mobile connections and VPNs can place you hundreds of miles from where you actually are.
What is the difference between IPv4 and IPv6?
IPv4 addresses look like 203.0.113.42 and there are about 4.3 billion of them, which ran out years ago. IPv6 addresses look like 2606:4700::1111 and there are effectively unlimited. Most connections now carry both, and the panel above shows which one your browser used.
How do I change my IP address?
Restarting your router often gets you a new one if your provider assigns addresses dynamically. A VPN or proxy replaces the address sites see with the server’s. Your private IP can be changed in your router’s DHCP settings.
